Musculoskeletal Ultrasound
Ultrasound imaging is a noninvasive medical test that provides pictures of muscles,
ligaments, tendons, nerves and other soft tissues in the joints. Ultrasound exams do
not use radiation (x-rays). The test is safe and painless and uses sound waves to
produce the images. The ultrasound can be less intimidating for the patient than an
MRI since it only makes use of a small transducer and a screen that shows live images.
During the test, a gel is applied to the skin and a small hand-held device called a transducer glides over the skin to send sound waves
through the joint. The sound waves bounce off the soft tissues and return to the transducer and a computer translates those sound
waves into an image. The procedure normally takes less than 30 minutes. If you have any questions regarding the ultrasound,
please be sure to discuss them with Dr. Meccariello.
ADVANTAGES OF ULTRASOUND
Tumors, tears, abnormal growths, irregular movements, and calcifications can be
seen in an ultrasound. An ultrasound can be used on the exact site where the
problem is occurring and create a clear picture of what’s causing the issue as well as
the extent of the damage. With an ultrasound, Dr. Meccariello can also observe what
happens during movement, making it a very dynamic diagnostic tool.
HOW ULTRASOUND WORKS
Dr. Meccariello can also use ultrasound to guide pain-relieving injections and other therapies such as Platelet-Rich Plasma. The
ultrasound provides clear, real-time imaging so the injection can be delivered to the precise location it is needed. Often, a diagnostic
ultrasound and the treatment injection can be done in the same appointment.
