NON-SURGICAL ORTHOPEDICS

Non-surgical orthopedics emphasizes the use of state-of-the-art technology, combined with time-tested treatments, to help patients regain function, decrease pain and return to an active lifestyle. Non-surgical alternatives can often be effective treatments for:
Sports medicine is the field concerned with physical fitness and the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of injuries sustained in sports or exercise-related activities. This includes, but is not limited to, sprains, strains and other soft tissue injuries, stress fractures, knee and ankle injuries, shoulder impingement, and tennis or “Little Leaguer’s” elbow.

Chronic lower back pain Head, neck & TMJ pain Upper & lower extremity pain
On-the-job injuries Auto accident pain Sports injury
Ultrasound imaging is a noninvasive medical test that provides pictures of muscles, ligaments, tendons, nerves and other soft tissues in the joints. Ultrasound exams do not use radiation (x- rays). The test is safe and painless and uses sound waves to produce the images. The ultrasound images help Dr. Meccariello diagnose and treat various orthopedic conditions. During the test, a gel is applied to the skin and a small hand-held device called a transducer glides over the skin to send sound waves through the joint. The sound waves bounce off the soft tissues and return to the transducer and a computer translates those sound waves into an image. Often ultrasound can be used to diagnose pain or conditions that are difficult to diagnose with other imaging techniques or tests. It allows for dynamic evaluation of the joints and soft tissues and an interactive approach where the examiner can localize an area of pain in real time and visualize the muscles and bones while the patient is moving to help make a diagnosis that may have been otherwise missed. Dr. Meccariello may use an ultrasound test to help diagnose and treat:
Tendon tears or tendinitis Muscle tears Masses or fluid that has collected in joints
Ligament sprains or tears Inflammation with joints Nerve entrapments
Soft tissue tumors and cysts Hernias Dislocations
Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive treatment for joint injuries. It can be helpful for patients suffering from plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, and other types of chronic inflammation conditions. Rapid, focused shockwaves are applied to the affected area for between 5 and 15 minutes. The procedure may be slightly uncomfortable, but it is not painful for most patients. The Shockwave Therapy diminishes pain and discomfort of injured joints and tissue while helping to speed up the recovery process.
Platelet-rich plasma with enhanced healing properties is extracted from the patient’s blood and then injected directly into affected joints. PRP has a success rate of 70-80% in alleviating discomfort and promoting healing in tendon and muscle injuries with continued improvement over the next several months after the treatment. Dr. Meccariello can help you jump start your body’s healing process with PRP Therapy.
